By its very nature bike racing tends to produce great heroes. Number one in my list, ahead of Sheene, Ago, Foggy and the like is Joey Dunlop. If you need a “hero template” then Joey is the one.
His first sponsor was “the dole”, he was a racing natural, becoming virtually unbeatable on the roads, winning TT’s in his late forties, a man who didn’t realise (or care) that he was such a star on the world stage and so important to so many people.
Away from racing he was equally legendary, with his charity trips to Eastern Europe. He did this, because it was the right thing to do, not to “raise his profile” and risked his life in the process.
