Carl Fogarty, the enigmatic racer from Blackburn was for many years the best UK racer we had.

Multiple WSB champion, his Italian fans nicknamed him “The Lion heart”.

This neatly summed up his racing style. If something was wrong with the bike he simply rode round or over it, in a way that many modern prima dona racers simply couldn’t (or wouldn’t)do.

He was also at home at the Isle Of Man where he had an epic battle with Steve Hislop in 1992, thrilling the crowds in a Yamaha/Norton duel to the finish.

Although Hislop won by four seconds Fogarty, on his Yamaha, wasn’t hanging around - he set a new outright record at 123.61 mph on the last, nail-biting lap! This record stood for seven years until 1999.

Sadly he was never given any real chance at GP’s.
